About the Artist

Janice Chae is a multidisciplinary artist whose work explores the fluid spaces between tradition and modernity, culture and technology, memory and imagination. Trained as a graphic and motion designer, Janice now blends digital tools with hand-painted techniques to create richly layered pieces that reflect her multicultural identity and evolving practice.

Drawing inspiration from Korean minhwa folk painting, Western decorative arts like toile de Jouy, and the visual language of both past and future Seoul, Janice creates dreamlike scenes where time collapses. Figures from the Joseon Dynasty walk alongside modern characters, guided by tigers that serve as guardians of eras and identity.

Her process often begins with AI-generated prompts, which she refines through digital painting and finishes by hand with acrylic gouache. This layered method is not just technical—it’s philosophical, echoing the multiple worlds she inhabits.

Born in Korea and raised in suburban America, Janice has lived and worked in New York, Seoul, and now Singapore. It was in Singapore, surrounded by a rich tapestry of cultures, that she finally felt at home—unbound, and fully herself.

Through her work, Janice invites viewers to reimagine boundaries—not as borders, but as places where new stories begin.

She is currently represented by Gallery T, one of South Korea’s leading contemporary art galleries.
